This course will introduce students to pressing issues and questions related to the histories and cultures of people of color. The course is designed to show how humanities methods can contribute to social transformation and healing for communities historically shaped by, and continuously facing, racism, violence, and dispossession. The course will build community among participants and introduce students to resources that will help ensure their success as undergraduates.

ISP 330 | PEER EDUCATION SERVICE LEADERS I | 2 quarter hours

This course is designed to prepare service immersion trip leaders and to promote their development as socially responsible leaders. The focus is on foundational theory and developing transferable life skills related to reflective theory and practice, Vincentian concepts of service, and peer education. Students must speak with their advisor to learn how this course may be applied to help satisfy their JYEL requirement.

ISP 331 | PEER EDUCATION SERVICE LEADERS II | 2 quarter hours

Students will apply the theories and practices learned in ISP 330 to their service immersion groups. Through experiential, interactive, academic and reflective activities students will continue reflection on Vincentian service and their leadership roles. Students must speak with their advisor to learn how this course may be applied to help satisfy their JYEL requirement.

ISP 398 | INTERDISCIPLINARY HUMANITIES RESEARCH | 4 quarter hours

This course will introduce Social Transformation Research Collaborative Undergraduate Student Fellows to interdisciplinary humanities research methods and provide them with mentored guidance in pursuing an independent research project related to the historical trajectories, legacies and/or cultures of people of color. Fellows will learn to distinguish between secondary and primary sources; learn about key methodological and theoretical approaches in the humanities; build a bibliography; develop a plan of work; write an abstract; and draft a 3-5 page prospectus for a 10-12 page research paper. The course will also introduce Fellows to area humanities and cultural institutions and libraries. The course is followed by mentored research support in which Fellows draft and revise their papers and create a poster presentation for the STRC fall symposium. Final papers will be submitted in December.
