The American Sign Language Studies minor at DePaul University integrates linguistic analysis with cultural study, fostering critical thinking and preparing students for informed, ethical engagement with the Deaf community.

The ASL Studies minor consists of six courses in American Sign Language at the 100-level (ASL 101-106), plus two electives from the course list below.

For courses in the 100-level of ASL, students must have one of the following criteria met to proceed to the next course:

  • Successfully complete the prior course in the sequence.

OR

  • Demonstrate proficiency via a placement interview.

OR

  • Obtain ASL Program Director approval.

Students who demonstrate advanced proficiency in ASL must replace ASL courses they placed out of with 200 or 300 level ASL courses.  However, a substituted course cannot also be counted toward an elective requirement.
