Honors Program Requirements for College of Education

The number of credit hours required for the Honors Program varies by college and major and is equal to the number of credit hours required for the Liberal Studies Program for that major. Honors Program requirements include an Honors Core, as well as courses in science, math, fine art, and language study. Honors students also complete a senior thesis or senior seminar.

HON 180 can be replaced by AP, IB, or course credit for MAT 242MAT 135MAT 137MAT 150PSY 240SOC 279. Students whose major requires calculus or statistics are waived from HON 180. 

Honors Senior Requirement

C- or better is required to complete the Honors Senior Requirement.

Honors Senior Thesis Option

Students who choose to complete an Honors Senior Thesis must obtain approval at least one term prior to executing the project. To gain approval, students must complete an online application that includes a project proposal signed by two faculty advisors. The final product must be a substantial piece of work that builds on the student’s accumulated knowledge and new research. Students should meet with the Honors Thesis Advisor for further information.

Science Requirement 

  • Honors students in the College of Education will fulfill the science requirement with a course selected from the university’s Scientific Inquiry Lab courses. Students may NOT opt for HON 225 or a Biology course to fulfill the lab science requirement.
  • In addition to the lab science requirement Honors students in the College of Education will complete one course in Biology.
  • Honors students in the College of Education should confer with their major advisor to confirm their science course selections.

Honors Language Requirement 

Honors students in the College of Education are required to complete three courses in the same language. Students may choose to continue a previously studied language or begin a new language. Students continuing a previously studied language must complete the language placement exam to determine appropriate course placement. 

Honors Approved Electives

In place of Honors Approved Electives, Honors students in the College of Education complete the following courses:        

AP, IB, or transfer credit may fulfill the following Honors Program requirements, when those requirements are part of a student's Honors curriculum:

Experiential Learning

Honors students in the College of Education complete Experiential Learning through successful completion of required field experience hours. 

Study Abroad

Study Abroad is particularly appropriate for students in the Honors Program and, although not required, is strongly recommended. Students interested in studying abroad should review their preferred program's eligibility criteria which may require a minimum GPA and/or a specific level of language proficiency. Students must meet with an Honors Advisor prior to their departure to obtain approval for Honors course substitutions. Study abroad coursework may fulfill Honors Approved Electives or substitute for Honors Core courses, provided the study abroad course is equivalent to a course in the Honors curriculum. To substitute major requirements with study abroad courses, students must obtain approval from their major department. 

Honors Advising

All Honors students work with an Honors Advisor for academic planning and to schedule Honors courses in conjunction with their major requirements. Honors students should plan to enroll in one or two Honors courses each quarter during their first and second years, and one or two Honors courses per year in their third and fourth years.

Transfer Honors Program

The Transfer Honors Program provides the same benefits to students as the Honors Program while allowing them to fulfill Honors Core requirements with coursework completed at previous institutions. For Transfer Honors students, the Honors curriculum replaces their Liberal Studies Program requirements. Acceptance to the Transfer Honors Program must be confirmed before classes begin for the term in which the student was admitted. 

Transfer Honors Core

All Transfer Honors students must complete a minimum of five Honors courses. Application of transfer credit toward Honors requirements is evaluated on an individual basis and specific Honors requirements may vary depending on the student's major.

Transfer Honors and the Illinois Articulation Initiative

DePaul University participates in the General Education Core Curriculum (GECC) of the Illinois Articulation Initiative (IAI) only. DePaul does not participate in Phase Two, the Major Phase. Completion of the GECC/IAI at any participating college or university in Illinois ensures transferring students that most of the general education requirements at DePaul have been satisfied. The GECC/IAI will be accepted as a package.

Students who have completed the GECC/IAI must also meet the following mission-specific requirements in DePaul's Honors Program:

Students who complete GECC/IAI with a course designated as Religious Dimensions may choose to enroll in HON 104 or an alternative Honors course approved by an Honors Advisor.

Students who complete GECC/IAI with a course designated as Philosophical Inquiry may choose to enroll in HON 105 or an alternative Honors course approved by an Honors Advisor. 

WRD 103 Requirement for Students Leaving the Honors Program

The Liberal Studies Program requires two composition and rhetoric courses WRD 103 and WRD 104. HON 100 fulfills the WRD 104 requirement. Students who withdraw from the Honors Program after completing HON 100 and who do not have credit for WRD 103 must complete WRD 103 or one of the following courses:
