The Language and Diplomacy BA Concentration

The structure of the Language and Diplomacy BA concentration is as follows. Students will be able to select six 200- or 300-level courses from 1) target language courses, 2) courses in translation and interpretation, and 3) linguistics courses.

At least two of the concentration courses must be at the 300 level. At least three of the concentration courses must be in a target language.

Embedded in this concentration are the following possibilities:

·       If students take five courses at the 200 or 300 level in their chosen target language, they’ll also earn the standard language minor in that language.
·       If students choose three of their courses in Translation and Interpreting, they’ll have earned the Undergraduate Certificate in Translation and Interpreting after taking the two-credit hour “TIC” practicum (MOL 379).
·       If students choose three of their courses in Linguistics, they’ll be halfway to earning the six-course Linguistics minor.

Students fulfilling the requirements of this concentration have the possibility of choosing to take courses in more than one language, but the majority of students will focus on one language. Students selecting this concentration for their major in Applied Diplomacy are expected to work closely with an advisor, in order to insure that their course selections both fulfill the requirements of the concentration and are best tailored to fit with their vocational trajectory.
