Class Attendance/Participation Policy

Menu

DePaul students are expected to attend and/or participate in every class session and activity, in line with the course modality. Regular attendance / participation helps to ensure that students keep up-to-date with course content and assignments and provides an opportunity for them to engage with their instructors and classmates. It also provides regular opportunities for asking questions about any aspects of course content or assignments that may be unclear. For all of these reasons, regular attendance / participation contributes to students successfully completing their coursework. Students should be aware that missing class and/or assignments makes it less likely that they will be able to successfully meet the learning outcomes for that course.

There may be times when students are unable to attend class or experience delays in completing course work. In these situations, the following applies:

  • It is students’ responsibility to review the attendance and late/missing work policies for their courses and to communicate with the course instructor if they have any questions or concerns.
  • If at all possible, students should communicate with their instructors about any absence or late work prior to the event.
  • If a student is registered with the Center for Students with Disabilities and has accommodations which specifically allow for consideration regarding deadlines and absences, it is the student’s responsibility to ensure that their professors are aware of that accommodation in advance, and that the student communicate the need to employ that accommodation in a timely manner.
  • If a student is struggling to continue at DePaul due to exceptional life circumstances (e.g. hospitalization, death in the family, housing insecurity) the student is encouraged to contact the Dean of Students Office to learn more about appropriate resources.
