Course Requirements

Completion of a Master of Science Degree in Speech Language Pathology including the following coursework addressing methods of teaching exceptional children, reading methods, content area reading, and methods of teaching English learners. Individuals may only qualify for a PEL in School Support Personnel for Speech Language Pathology after first completing the master’s degree requirements. Information below is supplemental to that program.

Licensure Tests

Individuals seeking the PEL School Support Personnel Endorsement must successfully complete two licensure tests:

School-Based Internship

​​150 hours of supervised, school-based professional experience that consists of activities related to aspects of practice addressed in the content-area standard with respect to:

  • planning and intervention,
  • the learning environment,
  • service delivery,
  • professional conduct and ethics, 
  • and facilitation and advocacy.
  • Completion of an accredited Masters/Doctoral program and 9 months of full time, supervised professional experience;

State of IL Licensure

Individuals must also apply for/obtain the state professional license from the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR). You may begin the PEL application process while awaiting verification of the IDFPR and ASHA CCCs.

Endorsement Application

All individuals must notify their advisor upon completion of the required coursework and licensure tests for DePaul to submit entitlement notification to the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE). Application for the endorsement may require an additional application fee if the individual already holds a Professional Educator License (PEL). All individuals must meet ISBE requirements at the time of application. Requirements are subject to change per the discretion of ISBE.
